One of the most important parts of listening to music is having the right headphones. You want to have the right headset for your price range, your comfort level, and your music listening needs. Sennheiser is known for their distinguished headphones, they manufacture some of the most popular brands of headphones available.
The HD 518 model is the least expensive headset in their product line. They are designed for use at home and will deliver a premium quality product at an extremely affordable price. This article will review the design, features and sound quality of the Sennheiser HD 518 headset.
The HD 518 Design
Designed to be an at home headset this device is open-backed and will completely cover your ears. They are an appropriate size for your head and do not look bulky like some other models. However, they are not designed for complete noise isolation and sound will leak from the ear phones.
Made from plastic, they are still durable and offers the user high quality. Experience a good comfortable fit on your head, for hours of music listening. Plus, the open design helps breathe right through and reduces the overall heating of your ears and sweating of your head.
Higher quality headphones offer velour ear cups, but this model has a less expensive material. The HD 518 is a little rougher around the edges, the foam is springier and the material is not as soft. Even though they are not as luxurious as other high quality models, they are still comfortable for long hours of use.
Stylistically the grille on this headset leaves much to be desired, however this is merely cosmetic and individual user opinion may vary.
The Sennheiser Features
In regards to comfort and physical appearance this Sennheiser headset is a step down from the more advanced Sennheiser models, however in regards to features this set is very comparable.
These headphones are lightweight but not very discreet in appearance. The ear cups are large and circumaural, this means they fit around your ears and not in or on them.
Enjoy a 2.5 mm cable that is removable and has a turn to lock mechanism, which keeps it in place while in use. The cable is 3m long and can be easily replaced if necessary. The jack at the end of the cable is 6.3 mm. This headset also has an adaptor that is 3.5 mm.
Unfortunately there is no built in microphone for using this device with an iPhone or gaming systems. As well, this headset has not performed well with MP3 players that have a low bit rate.
HD 518 Sound Quality
Between the HD 650 Sennheiser model and the HD 518 model there is no compromise in sound quality. Users will enjoy a balance, highly detailed and rich in sound. They do not have a heavy bass, but are still very measured and offer a full, warm sound that is great for both movies and music.
With a frequency range of 14 to 26,000 Hz you can’t go wrong with this in door headset. It will keep you entertained when no one else is around. Enjoy an airy and sibilance free sound that is very easy-going. However, the tone is slightly darker than other more advanced models.
There is only a 30 Ohm impedance with these headphones so they are not as hard to drive as the HD 600, 650 and 800 models. However they could benefit from a headphone amp, to amplify the sound. Rock, pop and classical music tend to sound the clearest and be the most well balanced in regards to sound.
Overall, the Sennheiser HD 518 is an excellent value. It won’t make a dent in your wallet and you still get all the great Sennheiser features. The sound is very detailed and has a warm tone. Plus, the cable is detachable for your convenience. The only downside is that this model is not as high tech and heavy duty as the 600 Sennheiser headsets and the Grille Speaker is not appealing for all buyers.
